Gas tax FAQ

Which state has the highest gas tax?
California has the highest state gasoline taxes and fees in this dataset, at roughly 71 cents per gallon before the 18.4-cent federal excise tax. Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Indiana round out the highest tier. Rates change often — verify with the state before relying on an exact figure.
Which state has the lowest gas tax?
Alaska, at roughly 9 cents per gallon of state taxes and fees — the lowest in the country by a wide margin. Federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon still applies everywhere.
What is the federal gas tax?
The federal excise tax is 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel. It has not changed since 1993 and applies on top of every state's own taxes and fees.
Why is diesel taxed more than gasoline in many states?
Heavier vehicles cause disproportionately more road wear, and diesel is predominantly a commercial fuel — so both the federal government (24.4¢ vs 18.4¢) and many states set higher diesel rates to charge road costs to the trucks that generate them.
Do these numbers include local taxes and fees?
The dataset aims to capture state-level per-gallon taxes and fees. Some states also allow county or city fuel taxes, and some apply sales tax on top, so your pump price can reflect more than what's shown here. Treat these figures as a state-to-state comparison, not an invoice.
